xslt

Command-line XSLT 3.0/4.0 processor for .NET. Transform XML documents from the terminal using the PhoenixmlDb XSLT engine.

Installation

dotnet tool install -g xslt

Usage

# Transform XML with a stylesheet
xslt stylesheet.xsl input.xml

# Write output to a file
xslt -o result.html report.xsl data.xml

# Start from a named template (no source needed)
xslt -it main generate.xsl

# Pass parameters
xslt -p year=2026 -p title="Report" style.xsl data.xml

# Read source from stdin
cat data.xml | xslt transform.xsl

# Show timing breakdown
xslt --timing style.xsl large-input.xml

# Validate a stylesheet without running
xslt --dry-run style.xsl

# Stream large files (lower memory)
xslt --stream style.xsl large-input.xml

Features

  • XSLT 3.0/4.0 — packages, streaming, maps/arrays, higher-order functions, JSON output
  • Multiple output methods — XML, HTML, XHTML, text, JSON, adaptive
  • Streaming — process large files without loading into memory
  • xsl:result-document — generate multiple output files in one transform
  • Parameters — pass values from the command line
  • Timing — built-in performance profiling
  • Tracing — log template matching, function calls, and built-in rules

Takes **PhoenixmlDb.XQuery 2.4.1**. A patch for a regression in 2.4.0 that **broke XSpec
compilation** (#191, reported by Martin Honnen two hours after 2.4.0 shipped).

### Fixed

- **A string subtype had no effective boolean value** (#191, #192, and xquery#89).
`if (xs:NCName('a'))` raised `FORG0006` instead of returning true. The hole predates 2.4.0, but
it became reachable when 2.4.0 correctly made `prefix-from-QName` return `xs:NCName`. XSpec's
compiler tests a prefix in an `if`, so every XSpec suite stopped compiling. Both engines had
their own copy of the gap: XSLT evaluates `xsl:if` and `xsl:when` tests itself. That copy was
also missing float and typed-integer cases, so `test="xs:float(1)"` or `test="xs:short(1)"`
raised `FORG0006` in XSLT only. Both are fixed.
- From XQuery 2.4.1: string-subtype **map keys**, **`fn:translate`** and **`fn:collation-key`**.

### Verified

The release gate (`scripts/release-gate.sh`), new with this release, compiles XSpec's tutorial
suites, runs Martin Honnen's repros and runs a sample of DocBook xslTNG's own test documents, on
the previous release and on this candidate. Pointed at 2.2.0 → 2.4.0, it flags all 13 XSpec
suites as broken. On this release, with 2.4.0 as baseline, the gate passed: **all 13 XSpec suites that 2.4.0 broke
compile again**, with 0 regressions and 0 output differences across the rest of the 99 cases.
The compiled tutorial is identical to 2.2.0's apart from one generated id.
