Command-line XSLT 3.0/4.0 processor for .NET. Transform XML documents from the terminal using the PhoenixmlDb XSLT engine.

Installation

dotnet tool install -g xslt

Usage

xslt stylesheet.xsl input.xml

# Write output to a file
xslt -o result.html report.xsl data.xml

# Start from a named template (no source needed)
xslt -it main generate.xsl

# Pass parameters
xslt -p year=2026 -p title="Report" style.xsl data.xml

# Read source from stdin
cat data.xml | xslt transform.xsl

# Show timing breakdown
xslt --timing style.xsl large-input.xml

# Validate a stylesheet without running
xslt --dry-run style.xsl

# Stream large files (lower memory)
xslt --stream style.xsl large-input.xml

Features

  • XSLT 3.0/4.0 — packages, streaming, maps/arrays, higher-order functions, JSON output
  • Multiple output methods — XML, HTML, XHTML, text, JSON, adaptive
  • Streaming — process large files without loading into memory
  • xsl:result-document — generate multiple output files in one transform

A focused output-serialization release covering the HTML, XHTML, and JSON output methods and serialization parameters. HTML/XHTML: the default output method now resolves to html/xhtml from an html document element (non-streamed results only); a Content-Type meta is injected into head; the HTML5 DOCTYPE is emitted (incl. doctype-public-only, exact-spelling name); the empty-element set adds basefont/frame/isindex; script/style content is raw text under the html method; prefixed XHTML/SVG/MathML elements serialize in default-namespace form (both xhtml and html methods, incl. ancestor/attribute declarations); URI-attribute escaping works for xhtml and honours escape-uri-attributes="no" (a double-quote in a URI attribute is a numeric char-ref); DOCTYPE identifiers containing a double-quote are single-quoted, and an empty doctype-system is treated as absent; a whitespace-padded method value is normalized; foreign-namespace xhtml documents serialize by XML rules. Serialization params: item-separator on the principal xsl:output is honoured; xsl:output/@parameter-document is read and applied (params + character maps); cdata-section-elements matches by expanded QName and a CDATA section splits around characters the encoding cannot represent; suppress-indentation no longer hangs on element text content. JSON: a node serialized inside JSON honours json-node-output-method=html/xhtml. Requires PhoenixmlDb.Core 1.2.2 and PhoenixmlDb.XQuery 1.5.5. No breaking API changes. See RELEASES.md for full notes.
