Quick Start
XAML
<Window xmlns:wpfHtmlEditor="clr-namespace:SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.WPF;assembly=SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.WPF"
Title="My Editor" Height="600" Width="900">
<Grid>
<wpfHtmlEditor:WpfHtmlEditor x:Name="HtmlEditor1" Margin="10" />
</Grid>
</Window>
Code-Behind
C#
public partial class MainWindow : Window
{
public MainWindow()
{
InitializeComponent();
// Set initial content
HtmlEditor1.BodyHtml = "<p>Hello <strong>World</strong>!</p>";
}
private void SaveDocument()
{
string html = HtmlEditor1.DocumentHtml;
File.WriteAllText("output.html", html);
}
}
VB.NET
Class MainWindow
Public Sub New()
InitializeComponent()
' Set initial content
HtmlEditor1.BodyHtml = "<p>Hello <strong>World</strong>!</p>"
End Sub
Private Sub SaveDocument()
Dim html As String = HtmlEditor1.DocumentHtml
File.WriteAllText("output.html", html)
End Sub
End Class
MVVM Data Binding
<wpfHtmlEditor:WpfHtmlEditor BodyHtml="{Binding MyHtmlContent, Mode=TwoWay}" />
License Key
Set the license key once at application startup, before any WpfHtmlEditor instance is created. The recommended location is App.xaml.cs (or Application.xaml.vb for VB.NET), inside an OnStartup override, so the key is in place for every window in the application:
C#
// App.xaml.cs
public partial class App : Application
{
protected override void OnStartup(StartupEventArgs e)
{
SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.WPF.WpfHtmlEditor.LicenseKey = "Your license key here";
base.OnStartup(e);
}
}
VB.NET
' Application.xaml.vb
Class Application
Protected Overrides Sub OnStartup(e As StartupEventArgs)
SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.WPF.WpfHtmlEditor.LicenseKey = "Your license key here"
MyBase.OnStartup(e)
End Sub
End Class
If LicenseKey is not set, the control runs in a 14-day trial mode. A purchased key can be obtained from your SpiceLogic customer account.
HTML source editing
Source mode provides syntax colors, a monospace font, line numbers, indentation and synchronized selection. Options.FormatHtmlSource controls automatic formatting. Long source lines continue on visual rows without inserting those visual separators into saved HTML.
For advanced source editing, GetTheRawHtmlTextEditor() returns SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.Core.SourceEditing.HtmlSourceEditor in both products. Use its Text, SelectedText, Select(start, length), SelectionStart, SelectionLength, ReplaceSelection, Undo, Redo and ReadOnly members. Positions count UTF-16 code units.
Large documents prepare in the background. Text remains the complete document while IsLoading is true; editing becomes available at SourceLoaded. Use the normal BodyHtml or DocumentHtml property for application content binding. SourceLoadFailed and SourceLoadError expose preparation failures while retaining the original complete text.
Upgrading to 4.0.0
The source accessor previously returned the framework's TextBox. This is a source and binary API change: recompile applications and replace explicit TextBox casts or framework-specific source-control customization with the shared source API. Applications using the editor's standard content properties and mode buttons do not need to access the source control.
The advanced SelectionSynchronizer API now transfers source through HarvestSource and GetSourceWithSelectionMarkers; code calling its former marker mutation methods must also migrate. Normal selection synchronization is handled by the editor. The former WpfTextBoxAdapter helper has been removed; use the shared source API.
For sources of at least 128 Ki UTF-16 code units, source change events can coalesce while a background worker prepares the current complete text. Subscribe to HtmlChanged or use the standard WPF content bindings for updates; do not assume one immediate notification per keystroke in large documents.
Deploy the complete NuGet or publish output, including the native source-editor runtime files. The package build targets copy these files for the selected platform. Native source initialization occurs on first source entry, so a missing native dependency leaves visual editing available and reports a failed mode switch.

AI assistant integration (MCP server)
SpiceLogic publishes an official Model Context Protocol server for this control. Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Cursor, OpenAI Codex, Google Antigravity, and many other MCP-compatible AI coding tools can use it to look up real properties, events, documentation pages, and current samples instead of guessing from stale training data.
Give this short prompt to your AI coding tool:
Add the MCP server at https://mcp.spicelogic.com/html-editor/wpf. Then create a small
WPF app, install SpiceLogic.HtmlEditor.WPF, add the HTML editor to MainWindow, load
a heading and a short bulleted list, add a button that inserts today's date, build
it, and run it.
The endpoint is scoped to WPF, so a WPF question cannot be answered with the WinForms API. See the WPF MCP server guide for tested setup instructions for each major client, including Google Antigravity's required serverUrl configuration.

Fixed built-in toolbar buttons becoming invisible when moved into a custom WPF toolbar. Moved buttons now retain their appearance, follow toolbar icon size changes, and keep their existing click behavior. ALM bug #1469.
