DocWright.Formats.Pdf
Dependency-free PDF reader, rasterizer and page assembler for DocWright: parses an arbitrary PDF — cross-reference tables and streams, the object graph, stream filters, content streams, colour spaces and embedded font programs — renders pages to images, and builds new PDFs out of the pages of existing ones.
Install
dotnet add package DocWright.Formats.Pdf
Most people should install DocWright
instead — it includes this package and gives you the one-call API below.
Usage
using DocWright;
using DocWright.Renderers.Imaging;
var converter = new DocWrightConverter();
var imageOptions = new ImageRenderOptions
{
Dpi = 150,
Format = ImageOutputFormat.Png,
PageEncoded = (pageNumber, bytes) => File.WriteAllBytes($"page-{pageNumber}.png", bytes),
};
using FileStream input = File.OpenRead("statement.pdf");
converter.ConvertPdfToImages(input, imageOptions);
ImageRenderOptions must set PageEncoded or PageStreamFactory — there is no output
stream of its own, and it throws if neither is set.
Page selection comes from ConvertOptions.Pages, and an encrypted PDF opens with
ConvertOptions.Password, the same way an encrypted Word document does.
Assembling pages
Delete, extract, reorder, merge and split pages of PDFs you already have — pages move whole, nothing is rasterized and no stream is re-encoded:
using DocWright.Core.Primitives;
using DocWright.Formats.Pdf;
PdfPages.DeleteInPlace("report.pdf", PageRange.Parse("3,7"));
PdfPages.Merge(new[] { "cover.pdf", "body.pdf", "appendix.pdf" }, "combined.pdf");
PdfPages is the convenience surface; PdfPageAssembly is the engine underneath, for
interleaving pages from several sources. Each call returns a PdfAssemblyResult that
counts whatever could not be carried across.
A reader, not an importer
This produces images, the document-level facts needed to produce them — page count,
page size, rotation — and new PDFs assembled from existing pages. It does not build an
editable document model, and PDF is not part of format sniffing, so Load will not accept
a PDF. Converting PDF back into an editable document is a different problem and not what
this package does.
Not to be confused with
DocWright.Renderers.Pdf goes the other direction — it writes a laid-out Word
document as PDF. The page assembler here only re-serializes pages that are already PDF; the
two share no code and are opposite ends of the pipeline, not a pair.
Hostile input
Object counts, nesting depth, decompressed byte totals and content-stream operation counts are all bounded, and image dimensions are checked against a pixel budget before anything is allocated. A hostile PDF fails cleanly.
Requirements
.NET Framework 4.8, .NET Standard 2.0, .NET 8.0 or .NET 10.0. No third-party dependencies.

DocWright
Convert, render and edit Word documents in .NET — no Microsoft Word, no Office interop, no native dependencies. Reads DOCX and legacy DOC, renders to PDF and PNG/JPEG, saves to DOCX, HTML, Markdown, RTF, text, ODT, EPUB and RDL, rasterizes existing PDFs, and edits documents through a mutable model with find/replace, placeholder filling, content controls and tracked changes. This is the main package: install it for the whole pipeline. |
