DocWright.Formats.Docx

The DOCX reader and writer for DocWright — streaming WordprocessingML parsing into the mutable document model, and a writer that round-trips losslessly.

Install

dotnet add package DocWright.Formats.Docx

Most people should install DocWright instead — it includes this package plus the layout engine and renderers, and gives you the DocWrightConverter API that reads and writes .docx for you.

Install this one directly only if you want the DOCX reader/writer on its own.

Dependencies

This is the only DocWright package with a third-party dependency on the OOXML stack: DocumentFormat.OpenXml. It is installed automatically. Everything else DocWright ships is dependency-free.

Usage through the main package

using DocWright;

var converter = new DocWrightConverter();

using var document = converter.Load(File.OpenRead("report.docx"));

// ... edit the document ...

using FileStream output = File.Create("out.docx");
converter.Save(document, output, ".docx");

Lossless round-trip

Markup this library does not model is preserved rather than dropped. Unknown parts and elements are kept verbatim and re-emitted on save, so features it has no opinion about survive a load-and-save cycle instead of silently disappearing.

Relationship ids are preserved too, so re-saving does not renumber every r:id in the package.

Hostile input

Element nesting depth is bounded before the document is materialized, and numeric attribute values are clamped at the parse boundary, so a malformed or deliberately hostile package fails as a typed exception rather than exhausting the stack or memory.

DocWright

Convert, render and edit Word documents in .NET — no Microsoft Word, no Office interop, no native dependencies. Reads DOCX and legacy DOC, renders to PDF and PNG/JPEG, saves to DOCX, HTML, Markdown, RTF, text, ODT, EPUB and RDL, rasterizes existing PDFs, and edits documents through a mutable model with find/replace, placeholder filling, content controls and tracked changes. This is the main package: install it for the whole pipeline.
