Load connection strings from a vault directly into .NET configuration.

Installation

dotnet add package DKX.VaultStrings

Example

Any configuration value starting with op:// is automatically resolved via the 1Password CLI.

{
    "ConnectionStrings": {
        "Default": "op://MyVault/MyDatabase/connection-string"
    }
}
var builder = WebApplication.CreateBuilder(args);

builder.Configuration.AddVaultStrings(); // call last

From this point builder.Configuration["ConnectionStrings:Default"] returns the actual secret.

Custom providers

AddVaultStrings accepts any number of IVaultProvider implementations. Each provider declares the URI scheme it handles.

builder.Configuration.AddVaultStrings([
    new OnePasswordVaultProvider(),
    new MyBitwardenVaultProvider() // op:// goes to 1Password, bw:// goes to Bitwarden
]);

To implement a provider:

public sealed class MyBitwardenVaultProvider : IVaultProvider
{
    public IReadOnlyCollection<string> UriScheme => ["bw://"];

    public string ReadSecret(string uri)
    {
        // resolve the secret and return it
    }
}
