jaytwo.AspNetCore.ResponseTime is a micro-library that measures request duration and writes simple response time headers, e.g. Response-Time: 1234.567 and Response-Time-Pretty: 1.23s.

Why?

Instant visibility: See server processing time in any client (curl, Postman, browsers, proxies) without APM setup.

Features

  • Adds Response-Time and Response-Time-Pretty to every HTTP response.
  • Response-Time is easily machine parsable, numeric milliseconds using invariant formatting and no thousands separators (e.g., 1234.567).
  • Response-Time-Pretty is easily human parsable, similar to golang's time format (e.g. 1m23s, 12.3s, 1.23ms). Not intended for parsing.
  • Measures time-to-first-byte (pipeline + endpoint work up to header flush).
  • Works with short-circuits and exception handlers (header still added).
  • Streaming-safe: Uses Response.OnStarting(...) so the header is set right before headers go out, even when the body streams.

Ordering

Place UseResponseTime() early in the pipeline to capture most middleware and endpoint work. If you put it after other Use(...) calls, you'll measure less of the pipeline.

Testing tip (xUnit)

Notes

  • This measures time to first byte, not total body transmission time. That's usually what you want for server work timing.
