JetBrains.dotCover.Framework
A support library for JetBrains dotCover that enables per-test coverage for test frameworks built on Microsoft.Testing.Platform, such as TUnit.
Add this package to every Microsoft.Testing.Platform test project you want to cover. Without it, the Unit Test Coverage window shows no coverage information.
VSTest-based test projects do not need this package. dotCover supports them without an additional dependency.
How it works
Test frameworks built on Microsoft.Testing.Platform run tests inside the test process. To break coverage down by test, dotCover needs to know when each test starts and finishes inside that process.
At build time, this package registers a Microsoft.Testing.Platform extension that reports those test boundaries to dotCover during a test run, so dotCover can attribute coverage data to the test that produced it.
When tests run without dotCover, locally or in CI, the extension does nothing: it collects no data and does not affect test execution.
Getting started
Add the package to your test project:
dotnet add package JetBrains.dotCover.Framework
No code changes are needed if your test project uses the generated entry point. If you set the GenerateTestingPlatformEntryPoint MSBuild property to false and provide your own Main, register the extension manually:
JetBrains.dotCover.Framework.TestingPlatformBuilderHook.AddExtensions(testApplicationBuilder, args);
Then run coverage analysis as usual:
- Rider: Cover Selected Unit Tests or Cover All Tests
- ReSharper: Cover Unit Tests
- dotCover command-line tool:
dotCover cover
The Unit Test Coverage window then shows code coverage.
Requirements
- A target framework compatible with .NET Standard 2.0
- Microsoft.Testing.Platform 2.3.0 or later. The extension registers automatically through the platform's MSBuild integration, which test frameworks built on the platform use by default.
- JetBrains dotCover 2026.2.2 or later, as part of Rider, ReSharper, or the dotCover command-line tool
Known limitations
dotCover disables parallel test execution during a covered run to keep per-test attribution accurate. You do not need to change the parallelism settings of your test framework. A covered run might therefore take longer than a run without coverage.
