Description

The 'Beckhoff.TwinCAT.Ads.SystemServer' Package implements a TwinCAT System Service ADS Server (Port 10000) and an AMS Router ADS Server (Port 1) for usage in combination with the Beckhoff.TwinCAT.Ads.TcpRouter Package, which does not answer these ports itself. With that package a stripped down TwinCAT System Service can be realized on Systems that don't have TwinCAT installed (e.g. the .NET AdsRouterConsole demo application).

Intended use — please read before deploying

This package is intended to provide a minimal TwinCAT System Service functionality for scenarios in which the standard/full TwinCAT components are not available (e.g. on platforms that TwinCAT does not support) or not appropriate (unit testing, Docker and other container scenarios).

Because it has functional limitations and lower security claims than the full TwinCAT System Service — for instance there is currently no integrated ADS Secure support — it should only be used in specifically secured environments and/or outside of productive use.

Discovery (UDP port 48899)

The System Service answers the AMS/UDP broadcast discovery — the standard mechanism by which a system is found, e.g. by the TwinCAT XAE broadcast search or Get-AdsRoute -All. The read-only ServerInfo service is answered without credentials by design, because discovery has to work before any route or trust relationship between the peers exists. The data it returns (host name, FQDN, OS and TwinCAT version) therefore has to be treated as public on every network segment from which the port is reachable; where that is not acceptable, keep UDP 48899 off untrusted segments by firewall/VLAN scoping.

The route modifying services (AddRoute / DeleteRoute) do require credentials. On Windows they are verified against the Windows account database. On Linux and other platforms no operating system credential back end is available yet, so any credential pair is accepted unless verification is configured explicitly: set AmsRouter:Discovery:EnforceAuthentication to true together with AmsRouter:Discovery:UserName and AmsRouter:Discovery:Password, or supply your own IDiscoveryCredentialAuthenticator.
